Talkeetna is a world class destination
for active outdoor enthusiasts. The jumping off point for
virtually all mountaineering expeditions in the Alaska Range
helped put the village of Talkeetna on the map. Climber
registration is mandatory.
Extraordinary opportunities
for fishing all five species of Pacific Salmon
plus Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic Grayling insured
Talkeetna as a desitnation for both Alaskan residents and
summer tourists alike.
There are a dozen local trails
which are being upgraded and trailheads developed right now
through a co-operative community effort. Ask for information
at any shop, store or eatery.
Just beyond the village proper
is a wilderness close to being as pristine today as it was
when the Den’aina Indians were the sole inhabitants
of the area. A fifteen minute ride in a bush plane can land
you in the alpine tundra, home to grizzly bears, caribou and
wolves. Hiking adventures are exceptional, offering magnificent
views of the entire Denali massif and fantastic opportunities
to observe wildlife in their native habitat. Exploring during
a hiking trip in the Talkeetna Mountains rivals
any trekking experience in the world.
Winter activities include superb
cross-country skiing on well groomed trails or the chance
to take a ride on a dog sled with a local
musher training for the 1000-mile Iditarod dog sled race.
Renting snowshoes and accessing local trails can reveal a
fabulous winter landscape. Wonderful views of the Alaska Range
and Talkeetna Mountains are within a half hour walk of most
trailheads.
