Moose Dropping Festival

This event is the major fundraiser for the Talkeetna Historical Society, and there are activities all day long, street vendors, music, plays, great food and fun. It is a family event. While the schedule never gets firmed up much before late June, based on the last 34 years, here is a quick outline of what to expect:

All day Saturday and Sunday: One Pitch Softball Tournament. Great fun, quick moving, at the ballpark. Watch it for an hour or all day. No admission. Ballpark next to Historical Society Museum.

Saturday Morning: 5 k footrace – can sign up earlier that morning for this but no guarantee of a t-shirt if you wait that long.

Noon Saturday: Parade – right down Main Street and then back again so you get to enjoy it twice, except for the bagpipers who always detour into the Fairview Inn.

All Day Saturday: street vendors; free music and entertainment in the park; usually a play several times a day; great food and good family fun.

Saturday afternoon: Head to the VFW for the Moose Drop Dropping – a raffle sponsored by the VFW. Don't be late! (If you are on "Talkeetna Time", all you will get to watch is the kids and dogs kicking moose droppings around.) Shellacked and numbered moose poop is hauled up in the air in a net and then dropped on a bullseye. Raffle numbers correspond to numbers on moose poop.  Winners include the closest and farthest from the bullseye. Sounds like not-much-fun but it is a highlight of the day!

Somewhere on the schedule is the Mountain Mother Contest. It varies from Friday night to Saturday to Sunday so not sure when it will be this year; probably Saturday or Sunday. Contest for the Crown of the Mountain Mama!  Lots of fun. Entries limited to mothers; limited number of entries and they fill up fast. Shoot a bow and arrow, diaper a baby, haul water, chop firewood, make a whipped cream pie.

Plus it is the last weekend of king salmon fishing. Also jetboat tours, flightseeing tours and rafting trips. Museums, art galleries, restaurants, gift shops & retail stores are open, and usual Talkeetna fun. Usually music and dancing in the evening – some family oriented, some for adults only.

Hope this has given you some idea of the fun we Talkeetna-ites can get up to.
Places fill up fast in town for this weekend as it usually corresponds to the last weekend for king salmon fishing, and you will need reservations for lodging.

See you in town.
